Something About the Way Black Women Talk to Each Other

The laughter, the love, and the little things we say that mean so much.
You ever been sitting around with your girlfriends, and somebody says something so simple, but everybody in the room knows exactly what she means? Nobody has to explain a thing. One person starts laughing, somebody else shakes her head, and before you know it, the whole room is carrying on.
That's one of the things I love about the way Black women talk to each other. We have a way of turning the simplest words into an entire conversation, and sometimes all it takes is a look, a certain tone, or two or three words to say everything that needs to be said.
Take "Not too much," for example. Now, depending on how it's said, that could mean you're getting a little too comfortable, you're doing entirely too much, or you might want to rethink what you just said. And the funny part is, we know the difference. Nobody needs a translation.
Or how about "I know that's right!" You can be telling your girlfriend about a promotion, a new relationship, or finally doing something you've been putting off, and she'll hit you with those four little words. Just like that, you feel celebrated. She didn't need a long speech. You already know she's happy for you.
But it's not always about being funny. Sometimes there's a whole lot of love tucked inside those everyday expressions.
I've always appreciated how Black women can encourage each other without making a big production out of it. A simple "I love that for you" can mean so much when it comes from somebody who's genuinely happy to see you doing well. And "Come sit by me" might sound like an ordinary invitation, but sometimes it's exactly what you need to hear when you've had a long day and just want to be around somebody who understands.
I think about the women in our families, too. Our mothers, aunties, grandmothers, and all those women who could tell you an entire story with one look. Some of the things they used to say still make us laugh today. And whether we realized it or not, they were passing down more than words. They were teaching us how to love, how to stand up for ourselves, how to laugh through difficult moments, and how to look out for one another.
Of course, every Black woman has her own personality, experiences, and way of expressing herself. But there's something familiar about those conversations many of us have grown up around. The teasing, the encouragement, the laughter that gets so loud somebody has to tell everybody to settle down. Those little moments have a way of staying with us.
And that familiarity is part of what inspired me to create Spoken Sis.
I kept thinking about how much personality and meaning we put into the things we say every day. Some expressions make us laugh, some remind us of the women we love, and others say exactly how we're feeling before we've even figured out how to put it into words.
I wanted to take those familiar phrases and put them on something we could wear. Not just because they look cute on a T-shirt, but because there's a story, a memory, or a little piece of ourselves behind them.
Because sometimes "I Said What I Said" really is all you need to say. And sometimes "I Love That for You" is the perfect way to let another woman know you're cheering her on.
That's what Spoken Sis is about. Celebrating the words, the humor, the confidence, and the connections that make our everyday conversations so special.
So the next time you're sitting around with your girlfriends, laughing about something nobody outside your circle would quite understand, enjoy that moment. Those conversations are part of what makes sisterhood so meaningful.
And chances are, somebody's going to say something that deserves to be on a T-shirt.
Because at Spoken Sis, we believe some of the best things we wear are the words we already live by.
With love,
